Dhruv Tara – The Pole Star

Anand sits  under a tree ,  fingers playing around  a satin ribbon . He hears a lilting tune – follows it and spots Mita !  She’s late -  digs out a cigar from her purse and then a  lighter which plays music  ! She kisses it before putting it in his pocket and he also  kisses it – he loves the tune .  Not a word is spoken – they are so much in love and at peace. Time flies -it’s late evening and he has slept  off – she tries to leave but can’t . Her hair is tied to the satin ribbon in his hand .

And they sing to the lighter’s signature tune , ‘ Abhi na jao chodkar ke dil abhi bhara nahin.......’

Next day he has to meet her father [ Jagirdar ]

He’s  rich and doesn’t see any poetry  in  romancing with   poverty . Hurt and humiliated , Anand  joins the Army and leaves without informing Mita.  She quietly takes on the role of  caregiver  to  his ailing mother .  His mother dies but Mita continues to stay in Anand’s   ramshackle house  – her  selflessness  motivates her father to donate  his wealth to charity.

Anand returns from the battlefield and is devastated to learn about the loss of his mother’s death . He also has to break the news about Major Verma’s death to the latter’s  mother and wife. To add to his woes they believe him to be Major Verma [ Dev Anand  in a double role]

He returns home tired and restless, lies down on a cot in the courtyard and she sings softly  . Comforting , gentle, optimistic - their love is foreve like the Dhruv Tara [ Pole star]

Endnotes

*Twin songs – the second starts from where the first ends. Dev Anand writes in his autobiography  ‘ rare, ageless – Jaidev and Sahir wove a special magic with each song. ‘ He added that they will be sung as long as romance lives in people’s  hearts.

* Sadhana’s smile floored Dev Anand ever since he saw her at Filmistan studio in 1959 and he told Vijay Anand to sign her for a Nav Ketan film. The dialogue and screenplay are by Vijay Anand who penned this line for Mita  – ‘ Hai toh woh chand si but sar uska zameen par hai ‘ [ She looks like the moon but is firmly grounded ]

Remembering Jaidev in August – his birth month .

  1. If the dealer qualifies, the playing cards are shown and payouts are calculated. Pai Gow Poker is a seven-card game between the player and the dealer. The dealer offers 1xbet every player seven playing cards and from these seven playing cards, the player then creates two hands to play. One of the two hands could have 5 playing cards and the opposite, solely two.
